Our founder and CEO Deborah attended Angel Capital Association’s 2011 Summit in Boston this week. She reports that nearly 97% of the attendees were male investors. The Golden Seeds investors made up the bulk of the female attendees.
When a session broke out for a quick bathroom break, the lines to the men’s bathroom wrapped around the hallway.
Images like this underscore the need for more women investors in the field of early stage investing, which creates jobs and spurs innovation.
Here’s a quote from a white paper published by Ewing Marion Kaffman Foundation, one of the largest foundations in the United States devoted to entrepreneurship:
At present, women are seriously under-represented in angel investing. Women own about half of this country’s wealth but, by various estimates, make up no more than 8 percent of angel investors. Increasing the numbers could be a logical way of increasing overall financial and mentoring support for new companies.
We here at JumpThru cheer on the pioneering women in the field of early stage investing. Let’s hope the line to the women’s bathroom at ACA Summit 2012 will be much longer!
